What it is

Eighteen archetypes of the Greek pantheon read as identity patterns in three strata: Shadow (the force that operates beneath and that you show little of), Light (the waking face) and Sacred (the potential taking shape). The result is the TRIAD — the dominant archetype in each stratum. It’s the lens that turns the map into YOUR myth: symbolic language with the discipline of evidence.

What it does NOT measure

It isn’t psychometrics and doesn’t pretend to be: no god score measures a trait. It’s a disciplined symbolic reading — in the interview, an archetype is only yours with a verbatim quote that supports it (no-quote-no-claim).

Evidence — symbolic language

Jungian archetypes and Bolen’s gods/goddesses work as a symbolic language of self-knowledge, not as empirically validated psychological categories. There is no published psychometric instrument specifically for Bolen’s archetypes (Greek goddesses/gods); the closest instrument in the field is the PMAI (Pearson-Marr, 12 archetypes inspired by Jung/Pearson, not by Bolen’s goddesses), whose coefficients reported by McPeek (2008, Journal of Psychological Type, 68) are mean Cronbach alphas of 0.68 and a mean test–retest of 0.72 — acceptable for exploratory use, but short of clinical diagnostic standards, with at least three scales (Realist, Revolutionary and Seeker) below or at the edge of 0.70. The only directly relevant empirical study on archetypes in general (Maloney, 1999, JAP 44(1):101–116, 151 participants) found factor groupings consistent with the hypothesis that "archetypal themes determine affective responses in adults", but with no effects quantified beyond factor correlations — and Bolen’s claims about goddesses as personality types have never been subjected to independent psychometric testing. The most rigorous current critique, Roesler ("Deconstructing Archetype Theory", Routledge, 2023), concludes that the theory’s biological, anthropological and transcendental claims lack support in the corresponding disciplines and should be abandoned, leaving defensible only the idea of a universal process of psychological transformation; Neher (1996) and Uchiyama & Muthukrishna (2019) reinforce that cross-cultural regularities in myths and symbols are more parsimoniously explained by cultural transmission than by genetic inheritance. The real value of Bolen’s system lies in its narrative richness and in the therapeutic function of naming patterns of experience — not in being a scientific map of personality.

How it enters the crossing

Narrative tier (0.6; instrument 0.65). It’s the bespoke lens that derives the Triad (with a margin rule: fit < 50 or a gap < 10 points = honestly undetermined) and gives the portrait its mythic layer — the names you remember.

The eighteen archetypes
