HOW your mind processes — before what it concludes.

What it is

Four processing modes — analytical, intuitive, creative and practical — measured as independent intensities, not as a type: all of them can be high. It reads the MODE of your mind: breaking things down with logic, catching patterns before conscious analysis, combining what didn’t exist, solving in the concrete.

What it does NOT measure

It isn’t the SCALE of reasoning (Cognitive Stratum/Jaques: how far and how complex), nor openness to experience (Big Five O: what you SEEK), nor intelligence. And it isn’t a "learning style" — that literature (visual/auditory/kinesthetic) has been widely discredited, and this test doesn’t use it.

Evidence — moderate evidence

Dual-process theory (Stanovich & West, 2000; Evans, 2008; Evans & Stanovich, 2013) rests on converging evidence from experimental psychology, individual differences and, more recently, neuroimaging — and is considered moderately robust as a heuristic framework, even though its neural basis remains little explored (Gronchi et al., 2024). It’s important not to conflate the Type 1/Type 2 distinction with Kahneman’s popular "System 1 vs. System 2" model (2011): Schimmack’s z-curve analysis (2020) estimated a mean power of 46% for the studies cited in "Thinking, Fast and Slow", with replicability between 12% and 46%, concentrated especially in social-priming findings. Need for Cognition (NCS-18; alpha = .90, one dominant factor explaining 37% of the variance, r = .95 with the 34-item version — figures originally from Cacioppo, Petty & Kao, 1984, and reported in the review by Cacioppo et al., 1996) is the measure of analytical disposition with the best psychometric support in this area, with a validated 6-item version that is invariant across countries (Coelho, Hanel & Wolf, 2018). As a predictor of performance, the CRT correlates .49 with a composite of rational thinking (Toplak, West & Stanovich, 2011) and predicts discrimination between true and false news (β = 0.66; PNAS, 2024). By contrast, classic "cognitive style" instruments lack discriminant validity: questionnaires (CSI) overlap with personality (R² = .53 with the NEO-FFI and .77 with HEXACO, EIV models), while performance tests (GEFT) measure fluid intelligence (rs = .35 with Raven’s) but correlate ~zero with the questionnaires (Cuneo, Antonietti & Mohr, 2018). And the "meshing" hypothesis of learning styles — that teaching in the learner’s preferred style improves outcomes — found no credible evidence (Pashler et al., 2008). A calibrating caveat: the analytical–intuitive distinction doesn’t immunize against motivated reasoning (Tappin, Pennycook & Rand, 2020), and its effect on epistemic beliefs appears to be culturally specific.
