Deep Jung
Shadow, persona, individuation — the work of becoming who you are.
What it is
Five dimensions of Jung’s depth psychology: shadow work (facing your own hidden material), inner world, persona awareness (the masks you know you wear), the path of individuation and openness to the numinous. It isn’t a type — it’s where you stand on a long road.
Where it comes from
Carl Gustav Jung · Collected Works (Aion; Psychology and Alchemy) (1944–1959)
Shadow, persona, Self and the process of individuation.
Carl Gustav Jung (ed.) · Man and His Symbols (1964)
The accessible formulation of the symbolic and the numinous in everyday life.
Margaret Mark & Carol Pearson · The Hero and the Outlaw (2001)
The 12 narrative archetypes the interview lens uses as a vocabulary of roles.
What it does NOT measure
It doesn’t measure trait or type — it measures engagement with your own unconscious. The gods are the Gods lens’s lane; here the vocabulary is process (shadow, persona, individuation).
Evidence — symbolic language
Jung’s analytical psychology holds a peculiar position: the psychotherapy derived from it has shown clinical effectiveness in well-designed German and Swiss naturalistic studies (a very large effect, d=1.31 on the Global Severity Index of the SCL-90-R; Roesler, Behavioral Sciences 3(4):562–575, 2013), with a 2025 pre–post study (N=104; Research in Psychotherapy 28(2), DOI 10.4081/ripppo.2025.869) replicating moderate-to-large effects (d=0.555 to 1.174). However, there is no RCT at all — the 2013 article itself records "Level I (RCTs): no studies" — so specific efficacy versus other active treatments remains unproven. The theory of archetypes and of the collective unconscious as innate/biological structures — the metapsychological core of the system — lacks empirical support: Neher (1996, JHP 36(2):61–91) and Pietikäinen (2003, Psychoanalysis and History 5(2)) already criticized it, and the leading Jungian researcher today concluded, after reviewing biology, anthropology, religion and mythology, that only the "psychological" version (a map of psychic transformation) should be kept (Roesler, Deconstructing Archetype Theory, Routledge, 2023). Mark and Pearson’s 12 archetypes (2001) applied to branding are a creative transposition of this theory; the PMAI, the instrument that operationalizes them (72 items, 12 scales), has moderate reliability (mean alpha 0.68; mean test–retest 0.72; McPeek, 2008, Journal of Psychological Type 68:52–67) and partial convergent validity with the MBTI, but it doesn’t validate the premise of universal innate archetypes. Recent cross-cultural evidence (priming with Chinese archetypal images; Wang et al., 2025, Frontiers in Psychology, DOI 10.3389/fpsyg.2025.1657224) supports a CULTURAL unconscious (Henderson), not Jung’s biological collective unconscious. In branding, an analysis of more than 2,400 brands indicates that strong brands evoke multiple archetypes, contradicting the prescription of a single dominant archetype (Merlo, Eisingerich, Gillingwater & Cao, 2022, Business Horizons 66(5):615–629). The system has high hermeneutic and clinical value, but its honest calibration is symbolic, not empirical.

How it enters the crossing
Narrative tier (0.6; instrument 0.65). It feeds the Depth and the Purpose of the Inner Map; in the interview, the Masks phase ("who you become in each room") is its harvest.
The five dimensions
Shadow Integration
Facing what you reject in yourself — instead of projecting it onto others.
Inner Dialogue
The conversation with the opposing voice inside you — your inner opposite (anima/animus).
Persona Differentiation
Knowing where the social mask ends and you begin.
Drive to Individuate
The call to become who you really are — whole, unique, undivided.
Openness to the Numinous
Sensitivity to dreams, symbols, synchronicities — to the sacred dimension of ordinary life.
This is one lens. Your portrait crosses all twelve — who you are appears where they meet.
